Lab Services

The Laboratory at Saint Francis Hospital provides quality outpatient and inpatient laboratory services, including blood work and specimen collections. Our lab provides full diagnostic services in the areas of anatomic and clinical pathology including histology, cytology, hematology, blood banking, chemistry, urinalysis, and microbiology. The laboratory operates 24 hours per day, seven days per week.

As a full-service lab, we are committed to an exceptional standard of patient care testing. The lab is accredited by the College of American Pathologists and operates within the standards set by the Joint Commission.

Clinical Laboratory Services

The laboratory uses state-of-the-art equipment and employs highly skilled technologists that are easily accessible to answer questions. Most testing is performed in-house including:

  • PCR (polymerase chain reaction) testing for Gonorrhea/Chlamydia from PAP (papanicolaou test) collection kits
  • Outpatient transfusion services
  • Rhogam services
  • Total Vitamin D
  • Fully automated chemistry and hematology analyzers offering a variety of testing

Anatomic Pathology Services

Our anatomic pathology lab provides a wide range of services. The lab is comprised of highly skilled, board-certified pathologists and experienced ASCP (American Society for Clinical Pathology) certified histotechnicians and cytotechnologists. All of our pathologists have extensive experience in general surgical pathology and cytopathology. Located on the main hospital campus in the Medical Services Building, the anatomic pathology lab is fully accredited by the College of American Pathologists and the Health Care Financing Administration.

The lab provides expertise in gynecological, breast, prostate, skin, pulmonary, gastrointestinal and hepatic pathology. Specialized tests including various antibody panels and breast cancer markers are available on-site to ensure rapid turnaround time for results.

In addition to state-of-the-art instrumentation, the anatomic pathology lab is equipped with an integrated information system to provide rapid case reporting and data retrieval. All lab results can be viewed at Delaware Health Information Network (DHIN).

Results

A physician-to-physician communication is vital to optimum patient care. Our pathology staff is easily available for case discussion and review at any time. Finalized reports are faxed to designated numbers upon completion, with follow-up hard copies by regular mail. Telephone calls are made by pathologists to clinicians on rush cases and whenever an unexpected malignant diagnosis is rendered by the lab.

Outpatient Services in the Medical Office Building, 3rd floor of Hospital with easy access from the Clayton Parking Garage.

Scheduling

No appointment necessary for routine blood testing, newborn screening, urinalysis and routine urine cultures. All other tests need to be scheduled through Central Outpatient Scheduling by calling 302.421.4141. Patients will need a written order from the health care provider specifying the tests to be performed and the associated diagnoses, insurance information and personal identification such as a driver’s license.  Please call with any questions.

Blood collection and specimen drop-off are available:
Monday-Friday:  7:00 am – 5:00 pm
Saturday: 7:30 am – 12:00 pm noon
