St. Francis Hospital Names David E. Stein of Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery Wilmington, DE (September 15, 2009) - Dr. David E. Stein has been named Chief of the Division of Colorectal Surgery at St. Francis Hospital.

Under his leadership the hospital will launch the St. Francis Center for Colorectal Surgery. The first center of its kind in the State, the center for colorectal surgery will specialize in state-of-the-art, minimally invasive surgical techniques for the treatment of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.

Of this important addition to the Hospital campus, Dr. Valentine Burroughs, Vice President of Medical Affairs, stated that "St. Francis Hospital is pleased to provide the community with the most qualified and compassionate option in the State for their inflammatory bowel disease and colorectal cancer care".

Dr. Stein is an Associate Professor at Drexel University College of Medicine and has been the Chief of Colorectal Surgery since 2003. He came to Philadelphia after completing his colorectal surgery training in the Department of Colorectal Surgery at the renowned Cleveland Clinic Foundation. His clinical focus includes the laparoscopic treatment of colorectal cancer and inflammatory bowel disease. Dr. Stein also has expertise in prevention strategies and identifying risk factors for colorectal cancer in younger patients, as well as quality outcomes analysis in surgery. He serves as the Director of Education and sits on the Board of Directors of the Susan Cohan Kasdas Foundation, for which he has created numerous health education programs.

Dr. Stein is also the founder, director and the driving force behind Drexel University College of Medicine's Mini-Medical School. This unique interactive educational program has taught individuals of all ages and vocations about different topics in healthcare. His high school medical summer camp has become one of the most sought-after programs in the Mid-Atlantic region, and his Mini-Medical School for Trial Attorneys created a wonderful dialogue between physicians and lawyers.

Dr. Stein received his undergraduate degree from Rutgers College and his medical degree from Downstate Medical College in New York. He completed his general surgery internship and residency at Jefferson Medical College. He is board certified in both general surgery and colorectal surgery, and is a member of numerous medical societies.
